Better Together - How We Work as a Husband-Wife Real Estate Team
When Amy joined me in real estate three years after I started, I wasn't entirely sure how it would work. We'd been together since we were 18 - married for over 40 years now - and we've been fighting ever since, as I like to joke. But bringing that dynamic into business? That was uncertain territory.
Turns out, it's been one of the best decisions we've made. Not because we're so similar, but because we're so different.
Our Different Strengths
I tend to be more fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants. Twenty-five years trading currencies on Wall Street taught me to make quick decisions under pressure. Everything moved fast, and you couldn't overthink things. Amy is the complete opposite - methodical, detail-oriented, and highly structured in her approach. Every decision is carefully considered.
Initially, I worried this might create problems. Would my quick decision-making frustrate her? Would her need for structure slow us down? Instead, we discovered these differences complement each other perfectly.
I handle the marketing strategy, negotiations, financial analysis, and contracts - all areas where my Wall Street background serves us well. I get genuinely excited about listing houses and figuring out how to maximize what sellers can achieve. Amy brings her decade of interior design experience, her exceptional eye for property potential, and honestly, something I can't really teach: she's just better with people.
The People Factor
Here's something I've learned to accept: Amy is way better at the relationship side of this business. Real estate requires patience, hand-holding, and genuine care for clients' emotional needs - especially during what's often a stressful process. She has this in spades.
I'm decent at client relationships. But she's extraordinary. Everybody loves working with her. She's baking cookies when clients' dogs pass away. She maintains deep connections with dozens of people in ways that would exhaust me. I've got maybe four people I can be that giving with before I burn out. She seems unlimited.
If you look at our Zillow reviews from the last few years, you'll notice my name has been phased out. It used to be "Scott was great, Scott went above and beyond." Now? It's almost all about Amy. And I'm completely fine with that because she interfaces with clients more than I do. When I weigh in, it's because I can add something specific - usually financial or strategic. Otherwise, I stay out of Amy's way and let her do what she does best.
The Trust Factor
What really makes this work is trust. I trust Amy's instincts about people and properties. She trusts my analytical judgment about pricing and market timing. We don't question each other's expertise in our respective areas.
When we sit down with clients for listing presentations, they get both perspectives. They hear my data-driven market analysis and strategic pricing approach. They experience Amy's ability to see potential in their property and understand what buyers are looking for. Together, we cover more ground than either of us could alone.
I sometimes describe it as more than one plus one equals two. It's more like one plus one equals two and a half. Amy brings capabilities I simply don't have. My finance background and analytical skills complement her design expertise and interpersonal gifts. The combination gives clients a more complete service than they'd get from either of us individually.
Different, But Aligned
We may approach things differently, but we're completely aligned on what matters: getting clients the best possible outcome while treating them with respect and integrity. Amy's softer touch balances my more direct approach. My willingness to push harder on numbers balances her instinct to accommodate client preferences.
After 11 years in this business and several years working together, we've found our rhythm. It's not always smooth - we're still the same people who've been arguing for 40+ years. But when it comes to serving clients, our differences make us stronger.
And at the end of the day, when clients tell us it was the best real estate experience they've ever had, that's what matters. Not who gets mentioned in the review, but that we delivered something special together.
